Abbott’s Glen Naturist Retreat and The Ledges, near Wilmington, Vermont

Rating: 5 out of 5.

BEST FOR: Wine-Foodie Naturist, Yoga-Wellness Guru, Casual Skinny Dipper, Newbie Nudist

Welcome to Meandering Mondays, where we provide brief reviews of naturist places we have visited in the United States, simply to offer our admittedly subjective thoughts about what we experienced there. Check out the "NAKED PLACES" tab on the main menu to see our ever-growing collection of trip reports, or jump to the bottom of this page to see other posts in this series.

Imagine a quintessential little countryside inn of New England, except when you get up to go outside in the morning, you don’t have to put on your clothes. That’s exactly what innkeepers Lindy and Amy had in mind when they opened this quiet little resort in rural Vermont, surrounded by vast green farmland and even a wooded stream bordering the backside of their property. We especially appreciated that many of their guests are first-time naturists, as this is not quite a traditional nudist park, but more of a clothing-optional retreat where you can find your way at your own pace. For naturists who know Vermont, you’ll be happy to know that Abbott’s Glen is just a short drive from The Ledges, a famous nude beach – or more accurately, a stretch of big, flat rocks – that local skinny-dippers have been calling home for decades. This is the perfect place for the Newbie Naturist to figure out the social nudity thing.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO GET THERE? If you’re going to Abbott’s Glen or The Ledges, you’re going to drive. But you’ll love every minute of winding through quaint New England villages and past the vast rolling hills of Vermont’s famed dairy farms. At The Ledges, you park in the main picnic area, then make a 20-minute trek along the wooded shoreline to the clothing-optional area. By the time we got there near lunchtime, locals had already staked out a lot of the best spots, so you might want to plan accordingly.

WHAT’S THE FAMILY VIBE? The atmosphere at Abbott’s Glen is most definitely of the family-friendly vibe, but they market specifically to adults – mainly couples – in an effort to create a serene environment where their guests will feel comfortable trying out clothing-optional recreation for the first time. They take great pride in having won a lot of converts over the years.

HOW ARE THE ACCOMMODATIONS? There are several rooms, a few with private baths, and quite a few more with shared facilities, but all are beautifully appointed exactly as you might expect at a quaint New England B&B. We were there at the height of the pandemic, so we didn’t experience Amy’s legendary cooking, though we did have a breakfast basket delivered to our doorstep. There are also options for camping with a tent or a small RV.

ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW? As of the summer of 2020, Amy and Lindy were giving serious consideration to calling the game and putting Abbott’s Glen on the market. Who knows if new owners would continue to operate as a clothing-optional retreat. As of this writing, I notice their season runs until August 22, 2021, which seems a bit early to me. If you have intel on their plans going forward, I hope you will post here and let us know. This is most certainly one of our favorite naturist places in the country.

  1. We did see a listing that Abbott’s Glen is for sale in the recent issues of the AANR bulletin, but unsure if they have actually sold it at this point in time. Hoping they find naturist buyers that are willing and interested in retaining its charm and purpose. We’ve never been — looks beautiful!

    1. It’s tricky! The place IS beautiful, and they’ve cultivated a loyal clientele, but there’s no question that this is a niche market. Some would say that catering to the naturist angle is a significant market edge! 🤷‍♂️
